19th August 2019
Senior Hurlers v Ballyduff Upper
Next Saturday 24th August 2019 sees our Senior Hurlers sponsored by Relate Care recommence this year’s championship. Our opponents in the knock-out stage of the competition is Ballyduff Upper so we are hoping that a good contingent of our supporters travel to Fraher field to cheer on the team. Throw-in is at 6pm.
Junior C Hurlers
The Junior C hurlers had a draw against Ballyduff Lower on Saturday last with some missed goal opportunities and some wayward shots costing the team a win with the final result ending 1-12 apiece.
Ballyduff Lower opened the scoring after two minutes with a pointed free but we failed to take the lead when a penalty was saved after four minutes. Shortly after we were on the scoreboard when first Lawrence O’Neill fired over followed by points from Keith Kennedy, Tommy Aldridge (2pts) and Stephen Murphy to see the side lead 0-05 to 0-01 after 15 minutes. Two quick points from Ballyduff Lower (1f) was answered with a Davey Byrne point only for a 65 to reduce the deficit to 2pts. Ballyduff Lower scored two further points in the half (1 x 65, 1f) while we scored points from David Ryan and Keith Kennedy(f) but at least two great goal scoring chances were missed towards the end of the half. Halftime score was 0-08 to 0-05 in Roanmore’s favour.
Within seven minutes of the restart the sides were the minimum apart when three points (2fs) could only be responded with a Lawrence O’Neill point from play. The lead was extended to two with a pointed free and then Ballyduff Lower scored a goal from their first real opportunity close in. A Mickey Reidy point for us was cancelled out with three pointed scores for Ballyduff Lower only for Lawrence O’Neill to score his fourth point of the match and then score a goal to give us the lead again in the closing stages of the match. With time almost up, Ballyduff Lower worked one last scoring opportunity and saw the ball over the bar to end the match all square at 1-12 apiece.
Congratulations to this new team for 2019 who have played six matches with two wins, two losses and two draws during the campaign and can now look forward to the knock out phase.
This weekend is a very busy period for the club. As mentioned above, our Senior hurlers are out on Saturday evening but before that we have the Junior hurlers play Ballygunner on Friday 23rd August at 6:30 in Walsh Park. On Saturday morning at 12 we have our Minors also playing Ballygunner at our pitch in Cleaboy. Show your support for the teams.
U12 hurlers trip to Thurles
Our U12 hurlers travelled to Thurles on Thursday 15th August for a Munster Hurling Blitz hosted in Semple Stadium. This was a great opportunity for the lads play at this famous venue. The bus departed Roanmore at 11:30am with 26 players in high spirits. After arriving, one team played three matches while the other team had a tour of the stadium. The second team then had their opportunity to show their skills for their three matches.
A great day of hurling and once more the players showed that they are not only a match for teams in Waterford but also from Munster.
This team played it’s first match on Friday 16th August when they travelled to Gaultier and came away with a 2-04 to 1-01 win. Well done to all involved.
