Weekly Notes for 15th July 2019
15th July 2019
Successful Family Day
Roanmore GAA Club held its annual Family Day on Sunday 14th July at our pitch in Cleaboy. The weather was kind to us and we had a great support from club members and supporters. All players in attendance got to show off their skills with games and skills competitions. The highlight of the afternoon were the Tom O’Brien and Eamonn Coady tournament finals where both games were played with good sportsmanship and were very competitive right to the end of both matches.
A big shout out to the organising committee and mentors for organising the day and to all our helpers on the day we would like to especially thank you.
U12 City League
Our two U12 teams made it to the semi-finals in their leagues last Friday night with our team in Division 2 taking on Clonea in Mount Sion and the Division 3 team in Williamstown playing against Slieverue.
In Division 2 the team has had a 100 percent record so far and played with great confidence to see off the challenge of Clonea on a scoreline of 3-8 to 1-6. We took the lead early on from an Alex Furlong point and an Eoin Burke goal only to see Clonea equalise within five minutes. The work rate of the entire team paid off in the remaining time in the half with further scores from Eoin Burke and Sean Murphy to leave them 2-05 to 1-04 ahead at the break. This lead was not surrendered in the second half with outstanding defending by Tom Kavanagh and Benjamin Meistas saw us qualify for next week's final.
Our young team in Division 3 had no luck in their semi-final in losing out to a physically stronger Slieverue side. A slow start in this one cost us with 3 first half goals for Slieverue leaving them ahead at the break 3-2 to 3pts. It was in the second half that the boys showed there metal and attacked the game head on with some beautiful hurling saw us take some lovely points by Dylan Murphy Adam Dobbyn and Daniel Ryan to put pressure on Slieverue, but the goal we needed would not come as we hit the crossbar and post in our efforts along with the Slieverue goalie making some superb saves to keep their noses in front. At the final whistle there was disappointment for the lads but they could be proud of their efforts final score 3-3 to 0-7.
U12 Division 2 City League Final against Sacred Heart is on Sunday 21st July in Walsh Park.
Minors win against Abbeyside
Our Minor team commenced this year’s championship with a fine win against a very competitive Abbeyside team last Wednesday in Dungarvan on a score of 1-15 to 1-09.
Abbeyside took an early two point lead (1f) and it could have been must worst except for a very alert Ethan Hayes in our goal that made an important save. This seemed to jolt our team into action and shortly after the two teams were level when first Lee Hearne and then Josh Sheridan fired over. A third Abbeyside point was countered when Lee Hearne’s timing was perfect when he arrive into the goal area to fire into the net. The Abbseyside threat was limited to two further points in the remaining time of the first half (both frees) while Oran Hartnett and Lee Hearne scored two points apiece to leave the halftime score at 1-06 to 0-05.
The first ten minutes of the second half saw the deficit reduced to two points when points from Ethan Flynn (2) and Lee Hearne (2) were cancelled by Abbeyside scoring 1-03.
As the half progressed our teamwork was starting to create more scoring chances and scores from Sean Burke (f) and two Rory Furlong scores extended the lead. With ten minutes remaining, Abbeyside were reduced to 14 when a player was sent to the line for a second yellow card offence and in the remaining time we converted two further scores to win the match while Abbeyside failed to convert some late pressure
