Weekly Notes for 1st July 2019
1st July 2019
U11 City League
Our U11 Hurling team in Division 3 welcomed Ballyduff Lower to Cleaboy in their final match of the league knowing that a win would guarantee top spot in the league. This young team have played some tremendous hurling to put themselves in this position and have made remarkable progress since the first game back in April. With a large support from family and friends the boys once again put in a great display against a young but spirted Ballyduff challenge. The first half of this game was a tight affair and after some early points by Dylan Murphy the crowd came to life when Jake Power produced a wonderful catch from the sky and turned to finish to the back of the net. A better goal in any division you would do well to see. This goal knocked Ballyduff back and Ollie Delahunty followed up with a second soon after. At half time the boys were in a great position and were all determined to go out and play to their maximum in the second half.
This second half also saw some lovely hurling with Ben O’Riordan clearing some long balls into the Ballyduff half, young Liam Murphy showed that he has the skill to follow in his family’s proud Roanmore tradition with a great point. Noah McCormack knocked over another point before Ryan Swaby capped a fine display with a great goal. Leaving the full time score Roanmore 3-9 to Ballyduff 0-1. The boys jumped for joy at the end and were joined in their celebrations by members of the Div 1 team and family. Well done to all.
Junior Hurlers v Bunmahon
Our Junior hurlers played Bunmahon in Fenor last Saturday evening and came away with a 4-12 to 4-09 win. The first half saw both teams lead with the opening score coming from Bunmahon only for a fifth minute goal from Darragh Swayby to see us lead for the first time. Bunmahon responded with two points and a goal before Ian Chester and Shane Nolan fired over. We regained the lead when Johnny Walsh rifled a ball into the net followed by a Jake O’Sullivan point. Towards the end of the half we conceded two further goals but ended strongly with Shane Nolan scoring two further points, a David Barrett point and a Tadhg Ryan goal to lead the score 3-06 to 3-04 in our favour at the break.
Aided by the wind in the second half we restricted Bunmahon to scores from placed ball (5fs) until close to the end when we conceded a goal from play. During the second half we converted scores from Ian Chester (4fs, 1 x65) and David Barret fired over his second point of the match but more importantly scored our third goal to seal the 4-12 to 4-09 win.
Junior C Hurlers v St. Pauls
In a local derby our Junior C team faced St. Pauls last Thursday evening in Cleaboy. Watch on by a sizable crowd it was Roanmore that converted first when Tommy Aldridge pointed but we conceded a goal shortly after. In a very competitive game where both teams worked hard where clear scoring chances were hard to come by and it ended level at the break at 1-02 apiece with Pat Egan firing over our second point and Jeff Tebay was at hand to fire into the net.
We scored a second goal early in the second half but St. Pauls then dominated much of the possession and scored five unanswered points. Two pointed frees edged us in front before two further scores from St. Paul’s saw then lead by the bare minimum. Just before the end Craig Norris fired over to end the match on a scoreline of 2-06 to 1-09. Well done to the team.
U11 Division 1
Our U11 Division 1 team finished their campaign away to DLS on Wednesday last. This team is full of young skillful hurlers and again produced a great performance. Defending with bravery and skill and not resorting to fouling will stand to these players in the long run. A lot has been learned by this team in this year's league and they have been a match for all the division 1 teams. We lost on the night to DLS 4-5 to 1-5 and we congratulate DLS on winning the league.
