Weekly Notes for 3rd June 2019

3rd June 2019

Junior Hurlers v Ballygunner

Our Junior hurlers continue their winning start to the season against Ballygunner last Friday evening in Ballybeg. Two goals from Shane Nolan and a goal each from Ian Chester and Tony O’Brien contributed to a total tally of 4-18 to Balygunners 3-07.

Playing with the wind in the first half, our team knew that they needed to be ahead at the break but it was Ballygunner that struck first after two minutes when they pointed from a free. Over the next 10 minutes we scored points from Paul O’Toole (2), Ian Chester (2), David Barrett and Shane Nolan before Ballygunner reduced the deficit, first by their second point and then a goal to leave a solitary point between the teams midway through the half.

Our players responded well, with points from Paul O’Toole, Ian Chester and David Barrett before Shane Nolan scored his first goal followed shortly after by an Ian Chester goal. The first half scoring was finished with points from Jim Walsh and Ian Chester (65, f) to leave the lead at 2-12 to 1-03 at the break.

Although playing against a strong breeze in the second half, we scored first, with points from David Barrett and Paul O’Toole before Ballygunner scored three unanswered points. Halfway through the half, we were reduced to 14 when Jake O’Sullivan was sent to the line for what seemed a harsh second yellow card offence. The team responded well with another Ian Chester point (f) followed by Shane Nolan’s second goal with a powerful shot from his boot and then Tony O’Brien scored his goal in a crowded goal area.

As the clocked ticked by, Ballygunner also scored two goals (1 penalty) and a 65 while our scoring was completed by David Barrett and Paul O’Toole to finish the match at 4-18 to 3-07. Congratulations on the team on an excellent performance. The team’s next match is against Mount Sion on 21st June.

U11 City League

Our two U11 teams were in action on Friday night with home games against Ballygunner and Na Gael. In the first match in Division 1 our team played Ballygunner in a very exciting game. Playing with the wind in the first half it was scores from players such as Keelan Reville, Eoin Burke and Daniel Ryan that saw us lead by 6pts to 5 but our defence was responsible for containing the Ballygunner threat.

The team produced a great second half performance to match their opponents in what the referee remarked was one of the best juvenile matches he had seen. We extended the lead early on when Eoin Burke fired into the net but Ballygunner responded with two quick points (1f) before a pointed free extended our lead. We held the lead until five minutes from the end before Ballygunner fired in two goals. Our players have to be commended for their attitude and perseverance as the match drew to a close and they were rewarded with a goal after a free was sent into the area and Keelan Reville was at hand to rifle the sliotar into the net.

Unfortunately for the lads when the final whistle blew we were on the wrong side of a scoreline of 2-11 to 2-10.

In the second match in Division 3 of U11, Roanmore raced out of the blocks with Dylan Murphy scoring some lovely points to get us up and running, Oliver White knocked in a goal and Dylan Murphy’s second to give us a 7pt lead at half time. Facing into the wind in the second half we knew we would need good teamwork. Ryan Butler had to make way for the second half having to give into the sickness that had him in bed earlier in the day (a super effort to be there at all).

The second half was real back's to the wall stuff with Ryan Burke on goal making many important saves. Tom Halligan, Conor McNamara, Ben O Riordan and Ollie Delahunty in the backs doing everything to keep Na Gael at bay. Dylan and James in midfield covering everywhere and our forwards keeping Na Gael busy we held on for a great win on a score of 2-6 to 2-3.
