Weekly Notes for 20th May 2019
20th May 2019
Our Senior hurlers travelled to Ballygunner last Saturday evening for their fourth round match in this years league. In an entertaining match that required an injury time winning score but unfortunately it was not in Roanmore’s favour. The match ended 0-13 to 0-12.
Roanmore started better but unfortunately some errant shots meant that we could not convert into scores. Ballygunner were first on the scoreboard after five minutes and followed shortly after when a ball was forced out for a 65 after a goalmouth scramble. Our defence was working hard and on many occassions through the match put their bodies on the line.
Shortly after Emmet O’Toole converted a free but Ballygunner converted a free also to retain a two point advantage. Gavin O’Brien’s long range free was cancelled out by a Ballygunner score and although we were creating chances, the wide count was rising. The sides ended the half all square at 0-07 apiece with our remaining scores coming from Emmet O’Toole (3fs), and a two points from play from Gavin O’Brien and Daniel Murphy.
Ballygunner started the half strongly and in the first minute a powerful struck shot hit the upright but was successfully cleared by Conor Ryan. This Ballygunner dominance was maintained for ten minutes and ended with Ballygunner leading 0-11 to 0-08 after 40 minutes. Both sides then traded scores from frees before we had three consecutive points from Ian Chester (f), Daniel Murphy (after some excellent play from Cian Chester) and Brian Cooke (who was introduced shortly before as a substitute). With both sides level at 0-12 apiece as we entered injury time, it was Ballygunner that scored the winner but again some errant shooting saw the game slip away from us.
Overall a good team performance that team management would be happy with against a strong Ballygunner team.
Our Junior C team travel to Butlerstown on Wednesday 22nd May for a 19:30 throw-in. Come out and support the team.
U11 City League
Our two U11 City League teams were in action on Friday last. First up it was our lads in Division 3 where we played near neighbours Mt Sion in a game of two halves. In the first half we built up a big lead only for Mt Sion to come storming into it in the second half, but we just held on for a great victory by 1 point on a scoreline of Roanmore 5-2 to Mt Sion’s 4-4.
The second U11 match saw our Division 1 team play Mooncoin. Our lads proved to be too strong on this occasion for a young Mooncoin side. The lads played some great hurling some of which was captured on video and is on the club's Facebook page. A great nights hurling in difficult conditions well done all.
