Weekly Notes for 29th April 2019

29th April 2019

Junior C Hurling

A big milestone occurred last Friday evening when for the first time ever, Roanmore fielded a third adult team in competition. The team travelled to Portlaw and and put in a great performance but could not manage the win to have the ideal start to a new chapter in Roanmore’s history.

Playing with the wind in the first half the team showed enthusiasm but were behind after three minutes when Portlaw found the back of the net. This did not dent the players workrate and shortly after Michael Reidy scored our first point when his free sailed over the bar. This was followed by a point from Tim O’Byrne and Stephen Murphy then pointed to level the match.

A second free was converted by Michale Ryan before Portlaw pointed to level the match again. Pat Egan was then next on the scoreboard for Roanmore but Portlaw scored two quick points to regain the lead. Halfway through the half, Tim O’Byrne latched on to a loose ball and found the back of the net. Unfortunately, the lead didn’t last long as Portlaw found the net for their second goal shortly after followed by a run of four points. Just before the half ended, Keith Kennedy pointed and Tim O’Byrne found the net again for his second goal leaving the halftime score 2-07 to 2-06 in Portlaw’s favour.

Two quick points at the start of the second half saw us take the lead but Portlaw were scoring also. Halfway through the half Portlaw scored their third goal and found points easier due to the wind advantage. Towards the end of the match, Philip Murphy was fouled in the box and Keith Kennedy fired the sliotar to the back of the net from the resulting penalty.

When the final whistle was blown, the team had lost on a score of 3-14 to 3-10 in a highly entertaining match. Good luck with the rest of the campaign.

Senior Hurling League

Our Senior hurlers travelled to Passage last Saturday for their second round match of this years league campaign. Playing against the wind in the first half, the team restricted Passage to three points in the first 15 minutes while we converted two frees, but in the remaining time of the first half, Passage scored 1-08 while we couldn’t convert possession into any scores.

Passage converted two scores at the start of the second half to extend their lead but playing with the wind in the second half we started to score. Gavin O’Brien converted three frees and Frank McGrath fired over to reduce the deficit before Gavin O’Brien then found the net from a close-in free. This was as close as the we got to Passage as in the remaining time of the half we converted four points (Gavin O’Brien 3pts (1f) and Conor Ryan) while Passage scored a further 2-04 and we didn’t help ourselves when indiscipline saw us reduce to 14 with ten minutes remaining. The final score was 3-17 to 1-11.
