8th April 2019

First Round Defeat

Our Senior hurlers suffered a 3-17 to 0-13 defeat on Saturday last in the first round of this years Championship against Mount Sion.

In a match that started brightly for us with us scoring the opening point from a converted Gavin O’Brien free. Mount Sion equalised soon after, but we converted four more Gavin O’Brien scores (3fs) in the next ten minutes before Mount Sion registered their next score. Cian Wadding (a Senior hurler debutante) then pointed followed by another free to see us lead 0-07 to 0-03 after 20 minutes. We converted a further four points in the remainder of the half with Shane Mackey, Billy Nolan, Cian wadding and Gavin O’Brien firing over while Mount Sion converted some late frees to see the score at 012 to 0-08 at the break.

We extended the lead shortly after the game resumed with a Gavin O’Brien free but this was the final score for us of the match as Mount Sion scored three points (1f) before a Roanmore player was sent to the stand for a red card offence. Shortly after, Mount Sion scored a goal to give them the lead for the first time. Roanmore were then reduced to thirteen players when a second yellow card offence was spotted by the referee. In the remaining ten minutes we conceded a further 2-05 to suffer the 3-17 to 0-13 scoreline. A plus for the club was the introduction of Craig Reidy for his first championship match which should stand to him in the games ahead.

The second round fixture against Fourmilewater has not been fixed yet and will be some time off with the inter-county break upon us.

Junior Hurling Championship v Passage

Our Junior hurlers played their first round match against Passage on Sunday in Walsh Park and had a 3-14 to 1-12 victory.

The opening ten minutes of the match were a physical affair with Passage leading 0-03 to two converted Ian Chester points. The next fifteen minutes scores were hard to come by and Passage extended their lead by a further four points (2fs). In the 27th minute some hard work from our mid field saw David Barrett emerge with the ball and his surge toward the goal was rewarded with a goal. Within a minute David Barrett was involved again with his handpass to Jake O’Sullivan crucial in seeing the ball find the net to see us lead for the first time.. One further point from Passage was cancelled out by an Ian Chester point from play to see the halftime scores at 2-03 to 0-07.

Passage started the second half strong and equalised within five minutes of the restart with two points (1f) before taking the lead again with a converted penalty. We dominated the remainder of the half and scored a total 1-10 while Passage converted three points (2fs). First up was a Conor O’Byrne point followed by Jake O’Sullivan’s second goal followed by a David Barrett point and six Ian Chester points (5fs). Our final score was form Tony O’Brien to see us win the encounter with a tally of 3-14 to Passages 1-12.
