Roanmore Senior hurlers win 2018 League Final
The Roanmore Senior hurlers had a memorable day last Monday in Carriganore when they beat Ballygunner to win the 2018 league title. Watched on by a large contingent of supporters the team went on to win the match 0-12 to 0-09.
The first five minutes of the game saw Ballygunner dominate possession and scoring chances and had two points on the score board before Billy Nolan fired over our first point of the match from long range. Billy followed up with a free shortly after to level the match followed by a Gavin O’Brien free to give us the lead. The team exerted some great pressure on Ballygunner and were rewarded with additional frees which Billy Nolan (1) and Gavin O’Brien (2) converted to see us lead 0-06 to 0-02 mid way through the first half.
We squandered some scoring chances in the next few minutes before Gavin O’Brien converted two further points. With 5 minutes remaining in the first half, a Ballygunner players was sent to the line for a red card offence. One final score of the half saw Ballygunner convert a free to leave it 0-08 to 0-03 at the break.
The team showed great spirit through the second half and players such as Chris Dempsey, Frank McGrath and Ian Madigan to name a few were instrumental in pushing the team forward. The opening score of the half went to Ballygunner but again Gavin O’Brien was at hand to slot over a point from play. Two further points from Ballygunner saw them gain some momentum by frees from Billy Nolan and Gavin O’Brien saw the team remain in front. On the final whistle, it was a 0-12 to 0-09 victory over a very competitive Ballygunner side. Congratulations to the team and this game should stand to them with the start of the club championship so close.
