Weekly Notes for 27th August 2018
27th August 2018
Senior Championship Quarter-final
Our Senior hurlers sponsored by Relate Care exited this year’s Championship with a three point defeat to Ballygunner. The 2017 County Champions were made to work for the win and although losing the encounter the performance was encouraging to see.
The opening scores of the match came from Daniel Murphy followed by two Emmet O’Toole pointed frees before Ballygunner registered their first score in the ninth minute when Pauric Mahony fired over a free. Shortly after the opening goal of the match was fired in when Ballygunner found space to breach Jack Chester’s goal followed by a second point for Ballygunner. Eamonn Power converted next for us to leave a solitary point between the two teams. A pointed free from Pauric Mahony edged Ballygunner two points ahead before Emmet O’Toole fired over his third point. From the 20th to the 28th minute we outscored Ballygunner with points from Colm Burke and three Gavin O’Brien scores to lead by two in the closing stages of the half but two late frees saw the teams leave the pitch at halftime all square at 0-09 to 1-06.
Ballygunner came out fast in the second half with four quick points before Gavin O’Brien fired over. In The next ten minutes Ballygunner converted six points while we could only manage two points.
In the closing stages of the match, the team showed great resolve and continued with their game plan and were rewarded with a goal from Eoin Madigan and two further points to see the match finish 1-13 to 1-6 in Ballygunners favour.
Congratulations on an entertaining match and well done to all involved.
Junior Hurlers v Passage
Our Junior hurlers had a win against Passage last Friday evening in Walsh Park on a score of 1-10 to 1-07. The first half saw us dominate possession and contribute a total of 1-08. The opening score of the match went to Passage after four minutes but between then and the 24th minute we scored 1-06 with Ian Chester contributing 1-02 in that period. First up was a score in the sixth minute with a converted free followed shortly after by a 65. Conor O’Byrne then fired over followed by two Tommy Aldridge points. In the 20th minute Harry White made an inch perfect pass across field to find Ian Chester who fired low into the goal. Passage scored their second point of the match in the 24th minute but we finished strong with Paul O’Toole firing over followed by two further scores from Ian Chester.
From being comfortable in the first half, the second half was nervous with Passage eating into the lead throughout the half starting with a goal from a free within five minutes of the restart. Passage converted a further five points before Paul O’Toole fired over his second point followed by the final score of the match when Daragh Swayby’s shot on goal was diverted over for a point to leave the team to prepare for a semi-final.
