Weekly Notes for 2nd April 2018
Senior Championship v Mount Sion
Disappointment for our Senior hurlers last Saturday evening when they played Mount Sion in the first round of this years championship. Leading the match after 60 minutes, a fourth minute injury time point from Mount Sion saw our team lose in a close fought game although it was ultimately two quick Mount Sion goals midway through the first half that contributed significantly to the final result of 2-12 to 1-14.
The match started brightly and saw us scoring four points in the opening eight minutes with two points from Emmet O’Toole (1f), Brian Cooke and Gavin O’Brien to lean 0-04 to 0-01. Mount Sion responded with two further points while a quickly taken side line was hit to Eoin Madigan and his return pass was fired over by Gavin O’Brien for his second point of the match.
In the fifteenth minute Mount Sion lost Austin Gleeson to injury but this not seem to unsettle them and within two minutes had scored the opening goal when Mount Sion’s Martin F. O’Neill found some space and fired into the net to lead the match 1-03 to 0-05. Within a minute, Mount Sion scored their second goal to extend their lead. Trailing by five points, our team rallied and a point apiece from Emmet O’Toole (f) and Gavin O’Brien saw the deficit reduced. As halftime approached some excellent pressure by Paul O’Sullivan near the Mount Sion goal saw Emmet O’Toole kick the ball into the roof of the net while surrounded by Mount Sion defenders to reduce the deficit, but we still remained behind at halftime with the score at 2-06 to 1-07.
For the first 20 minutes of the second half, we controlled the match allowing one further point for Mount Sion while we scored points from Eoin Madigan, Emmet O’Toole (f) and two long range frees from Billy Nolan that saw us take the lead in the 49th minute. An Emmet O’Toole converted free in the 53rd minute extended the lead to two before three scores (2fs) saw Mount Sion lead once more. In the 59th minute Brian Cooke scored to level the match for the fourth time and then Daniel Murphy fired over to give us the lead at the end of normal time. Unfortunately, two late Mount Sion points deep in injury time gave them the win.
Congratulations to Roanmore player Brian Cooke on his first ever start at Senior Championship level
