Weekly Notes for 24th September 2017
Senior Hurlers victorious over Lismore
Our Senior hurlers sponsored by the Bolster Group endured a tough physical encounter with Lismore last Friday night in Fraher Field and came away victorious on a score of 2-16 to 1-17 despite a late rally from Lismore.
Our scoring started as early as ten seconds after the throw-in when Eoin Madigan converted a long range shot followed in the second minute with Gavin O’Brien’s first point of the match. A pointed free from Lismore was answered with a Paul O’Sullivan and Daniel Murphy score to lead 0-04 to 0-01 after five minutes. Lismore answered with another pointed free before Gavin O’Brien fired over two points (1f). Between the twentieth minute and halftime Lismore converted a further six points (3fs) while we converted seven further points from Brian Nolan and Dale Hayes (1 pt each) and five from Gavin O’Brien (3f, 1x65) to leave us ahead by five points at the break at 0-13 to 0-08. Much of this score must be attributed to the work rate that the entire team contributed in closing down the Lismore attacks.
An early score for Lismore in the opening minute of the second half saw the deficit reduced followed by two further scores from Lismore in the next five minutes while we answered with two Gavin O’Brien frees. With 49 minutes on the clock a high ball into the Lismore goalmouth saw Eoin Madigan react quickest to shoot into the net for the first goal of the match. Lismore scored the next five points to reduce the deficit to two points before Emmet O’Toole fired in our second goal. As the match entered injury time Lismore scored their goal to leave a single point between the teams. The next attack saw a free awarded to Roanmore which was converted which proved the final score of the match to give us a two point winning margin.
Next up is the match against Passage on Sunday next at 2pm in Walsh Park and results from all the other group stages could have a bearing on the final standings.
U16s progress in Championship
Our U16s had to dig deep after trailing Abbeyside at halftime to win their knockout match last Sunday. Trailing by four points at halftime, the team showed a lot of composure to outscore Abbeyside to win the match 2-08 to 1-09.
Tadhg Ryan opened our scoring with a converted free which was cancelled out by Abbeyside. A Sean Burke converted free was also cancelled out by Abbeyside and we were finding it hard to create scoring chances in the early exchanges. Abbeyside dominated the final ten minutes of the half and outscored us five points to a single point from Jamie Daly. We trailed 0-07 to 0-03.
Ethan Flynn was on target early in the second half before Abbeyside scored a goal. Almost immediately, the ball was worked up the pitch and Jamie Daly was at hand to fire in a cross which Tadhg Ryan was able to force over the goal line. Within three minutes the sides were level when Josh Sheridan relied on his boot to kick the ball into the net. Sean Burke saw two frees sail followed by Ethan Flynn second point of the match and a Cian wadding point saw us lead by four with five minutes remaining. Two pointed frees in the final minutes from Abbeyside saw them draw closer but the defence contained clear scoring chances from Abbeyside. Deep in injury time a free was dropped in around our goal area and cool heads ensured that the threat was dealt with.
Congratulations to the team and next up is a semi-final match (date tbd).
