Weekly Notes for 2nd July 2017

Seniors Lose Sargent Cup Quarter Final

Our Seniors hurlers lost their quarter final match against Dungarvan last Tuesday evening in Cleaboy on a score of 0-16 to 1-23.

U16s win first match of Championship

Our U16s sealed an impressive 6-14 to 0-10 win against Brickey Rangers in the first round of this year’s championship. In a match that was played under persistent rain, it was Roanmore that started the better with Tadhg Ryan firing over our first two scores (1f) before Brickey Rangers scored their first point. Two further Tadhg Ryan scores (1f) saw us lead 0-04 to 0-01 after ten minutes. Brickey Rangers applied pressure and scored the next three points to level the match . The final ten minutes of the half saw us dominate the match. First up was the opening goal of the match when Sean Burke fired in his first goal after good work by Ross Connolly. Jamie Daly then fired over followed by Sean Burke’s first point and Sean was at hand on the stroke of halftime to finish a move and score his second goal. Halftime score stood at 2-07 to 0-04.
The domination that we enjoyed at the end of the first half continued in the second half when Jamie Daly fired into the net followed by Sean Burke’s third goal within five minutes of the restart. We converted two further goals in the remainder of the half, first up was Tadhg Ryan when he converted a penalty after he was fouled and Sean Burke capped an excellent match with his fourth goal. Tadhg Ryan converted a total six points in the final stages (2 f, 1x65) and although Brickey Rangers kept competing through-out the game they were no match for the Roanmore team.

U15s v Ballygunner

Our U15 team competed extremely well against Ballygunner last Monday in the Eastern Championship quarter final but lost the match on the slimiest of margins. Playing against a team that were physically taller than our players it is with great credit to their attitude that the final result was so close at 1-08 to 2-06 with our players dominating the last 10 minutes of play.
The team suffered an early setback when Ballygunner scored a goal in their opening attack. Sean Burke fired over our first point only for Ballygunner to extend the lead with a long range free. Another free after 10 minutes saw Ballygunner lead by four points before Rory Furlong fired over our second score. Ballygunner fired over a 65 midway through the half. Rory Furlong (f) and Sean Burke each scored their second points of the match as we headed to halftime. A final Ballygunner point before the break looked like the final score of the first half but Ethan Flynn was at hand to fire a shot across the goal and Lee Hearne was calm to gather and fire into the net to level the match.
Lee Hearne converted the first score of the second half when he converted a free to give us the lead. Ballygunner then dominated for the next 10 minutes and converted a total of 1-02 for no reply. The final 10 minutes of the match belonged to Roanmore when pressure on Ballygunner backs caused them to foul our players and Lee Hearne fired over two more frees. Just before full time Ethan Flynn fired over but the last attack of the match failed to fine a score and the match finished us with a one point deficit.
Great play by the team and they were unlucky not to progress in the competition

Stephen O’Keeffe Weekend
