Weekly Notes for 14th May 2017
Senior Hurler Team 2017 Jersey Presentation
Earlier this year, the club organised a fundraising initiative where businesses contributed €100 to the club with a draw to see which business would become our Senior hurling teams sponsor for 2017. The business that was drawn out was the ‘Bolster Group’ and for no extra cost, the Bolster Group’s name and logo will now appear on the Senior hurlers jerseys. Last Wednesday evening at our pitch in Cleaboy Mark O’Brien from the Bolster Group presented Stephen Murphy (senior team manager) with the jerseys. Also present in the picture are Chris Dempsey, Charlie Chester and John Ryan (Roanmore Chairman). These jerseys will get their first use later this month when the senior team face De la Salle in the Senior league. Once again, a big thank you to all the businesses that contributed.
Junior Hurlers v Ballydurn
Our Junior hurlers had their first match of the 2017 championship last Saturday in Walsh Park when they faced Ballydurn. The match turned after 40 minutes when we conceded a goal and up to that point both teams were equally matched. Ballydurn capitalised on their advantage and went on to win 1-15 to 0-09.
The opening score of the match came when Ian Chester fired over a long range free after five minutes. The next four scores went to Ballydurn to lead 0-04 to 0-01 after 10 minutes. In the next ten minutes our defence kept Ballydurn from scoring while we converted 4 points to lead. Our Scorers were Ian Chester (0-03) and Jeff Tebay scored his first point of the match. Unfortunately, Ballydurn finished the half strong and converted four further points while we only converted a Jeff Tebay point from play.
Trailing by two at the start of the second half, the deficit was reduced to the minimum within two minutes of the restart when Jim Walsh fired over a long range shot. Ballydurn responded with a point of their own but our team still competed and reduced it to a single point again when Paul O’Toole fired over.
From the 40th minute to the 55th minute Ballydurn exerted considerable pressure on our defence and we conceded a total of 1-06 without reply. As we entered injury time we had a chance at a goal when Alex O’Mahony rose high to catch the ball but his effort shaved the upright and out wide. Our final score of the afternoon came when Jeff Tebay fired over his third point of the match. Shortly after, the final whistle was blown and it was 1-15 to 0-09 defeat for the team The team does not play again until 23rd June but their were some excellent individual performances on display during the match.
