Weekly Notes for 13th March 2017
Senior Hurlers begin competitive season with draw against Dungarvan
Last Sunday our senior hurlers travelled to Dungarvan to commence their competitive season with a first round draw in the Senior League when the match finished on a score 1-11 to 0-14. In far from ideal conditions, both teams struggled to play their best hurling and it was a last minute score that salvaged the draw for Roanmore.
In the first half we played with the wind advantage and in the first five minutes we scored five points (Daniel Murphy (2), Billy Nolan (2) ad Paul O’Toole (1). Dungarvan came back into the game picking off points against the wind and we had further scores from Stephen Grant and Billy Nolan to keep ahead. With 10 minutes remaining in the first half Dungarvan scored the only goal of the game but we went in at the break leading 0-11 to 1-07.
The second half was very tight with both teams finding it difficult to score and our defence performed extremely with the volume of ball they had to deal with. Dungarvan took the lead mid-way through the half and Emmet O’Toole was unlucky not to regain the lead when his shot of goal was saved. The team were reduced to 14 when Eoin Madigan was sent to the line for a second bookable offense with 10 minutes remaining. The workrate form the entire team for the final 10 minutes was rewarded when the ball sailed over the bar from a tight angle to level the match in the last minute.
The next scheduled fixture for the team is the home match in the second round of the league against Portlaw on 25th March.
